The following letter was sent to me by John Papadakis after I requested material to post about the generation about to inherit the earth. Here is what John sent me:
Thank you John Papadakis
2007 is the driest year in the Niagara region in 50 years.
Fires, floods heat waves, droughts; this is the way of things for the beginnings of the 21 century. People are aware of the impact of climate change and the damage it is causing to the environment and to their health and the health of their children. But somewhere along the way a generation has decided that they do not have the responsibility of speaking out and taking action on the environment. Here is a dose of reality- you are not only responsible for the damage but have a duty and obligation to take action.
Some people still have the narrow minded view that environmentalist are shoe less hippies sitting around except when they are protesting something.
It is unfortunate that this kind of thinking still exist today when evidence exists. There WILL be more violent weather and greater extremes in temperatures both hot and cold. Humans think that global warming is because of all the pollution we put into the atmosphere and that's true, but we also get colder extremes as well. Messing with the atmosphere causes this. That's why the results of our irresponsibility is called CLIMATE CHANGE. This leads to conflicting scientific studies that confuse people and give the destructive corporations enough of an excuse to go right on poisoning us and our planet. After all if science isn't conclusive, then why should they do anything they aren't forced to? The stupid consumer will still buy their poison. Why should anyone take action on the environment when their stuck in traffic, late to pick up the dry cleaning, the game is on tonight, and all the other little self created problems.
Main stream media has also played its role in the support of the "anti-life" corporations continued endeavors to destroy our planet. When have you seen the Fox Network or the National Post seriously speak out against Japan's renewed whaling practices? the massive destruction of the environment by China? Or the increased use on coal and other primitive poisonous power source production around the world? After 200 years of automobiles is there anyone out there with an IQ higher that a banana peels that truly believes that the internal combustion engine (gas / diesel) is the only form of viable power for our cars?
The lost generation of environmentalists, the "Thirty-nine'rs" -age group around 39 years old- has a responsibility to take environmental action. This means taking action where it will have the most impact - the corporate wallet, as well as the ballot, use your vote! Do not accept what you are told is the truth. The blue box program is by far a failure. Why not have a bottle return program like every other province in Canada and many Countries? Why has the corporations not changed the way they package products?
And why do we still buy cheap poisons products from countries that think the environment and our planet- the only one we have the last time I checked- is their own personal corporate toilet?
The lost environmental generation should get off its complacent ass and speak out for the planet. This is the only home we have. Time is running out. You do not have the luxury of waiting for the next generation to speak out for you; the next generation will be too busy dealing with the damage caused buy us. Disease like asthma, cancer, toxic allergies, poisonings of our water, toxic food, deformities, drought, famine economic collapse, violent weather, despair, fear.
Perhaps you have met the next generation? They are your children.
