St Catharines CLIMATE ACTION NOW
by Jane Hanlon
January 2008 Newsletter Updates
As an organization we are now 1 year old! It may not seem like much, but in
the course of last year, we have:
Developed a Board Structure
Accepted a Constitution and Bylaws
Refined our Vision and Mandate
Developed a Brochure, Logo, Mail-outs
Held monthly meetings, Created Committees
Registered as an Incorporated Non Profit
Implemented an ongoing Eco Speaker Series covering in 2007:
Local Food, Home Canning
Putting the Garden to Bed, Increase Productivity and Soil Health
Without Pesticides
Indoor Composting – Vermiculture
Affordable Solar and Wind Energy
Advocated and received an Idling Bylaw
Advocated and received a Pesticide Bylaw
Assisted with the Ventura Drive Community Care Gardens
Canvassed a West End neighbourhood for a naturalization project. Told it
would ‘open a can of worms’ with all the encroachments on the waterway.
Cleaned up the Terry Fox Trail
Hosted the Earth Day Local Feast (in late spring, yet!)
Given several presentations on the Urban Forest Canopy
Canvassed for homeowners willing to host a free boulevard tree
Hosted the Eco Film Night on the future of Suburbia followed by the Electric
Car
Piloted the Urban Canopy with Boulevard Greenings, starting with Oakmeadow
Pl.
Offered a Business Contest to the Chamber
Created stewardship for the Circle Planting (plant material is miniscule but
it’ll grow, the next circle planting will require increased funding)
Hosted an amazing Eco Summer Social, still talked about
Selected a short list for a Community Garden site that met a selection of
criteria, met with several possible stakeholders for the future Eco Park
Initiated the naturalization of a school ground, more info at the upcoming
meeting
Sought Board Training, the results of which will make 2008 an amazing year
Met with Regional and Municipal groups, other Non-Profits, active member of
NEST
Requested an Eco Committee, Municipal Audits, Fleet Greening, Improved
Office Practices, an Eco Festival and Trade Show, …pending Municipal 2008
Budget approval.
Participated in Project Porchlight
And hosted a membership that is approaching 200 residents who are all
concerned about ways to improve our environment,
All without having hit mainstream media.
With this kind of activity from so many, awareness can’t help but increase.
Strategic Planning Meeting
Saturday January 19, from 10am to 3pm
696 Lake Street, north of Lakeshore Road
To prepare for the upcoming years agenda, the January meeting is intended to
flush out our priorities, and to define what’s doable, fundable, and
fulfills our collective mandate and vision. We’ll present requests received
from other organizations for assistance, offers of assistance, projects
available to us through Green Communities Canada, and projects that we’re
already committed to. We’ll break into teams to cover topics of waste, air,
water, and soil health.
This is an opportunity for members to have their say. CLIMATE ACTION NOW is
your organization, so come out to provide your input. Please call Joyce
(905-934-0593) to reserve a seat and to ensure that there is an adequate
supply of refreshments and lunch for all.
Have Your Say
In the meantime, to help us define priorities and gather suggestions, reply
to this email with ‘Planning 08’ in the subject line.
To offer suggestions for speakers for our ongoing Eco Speakers Series, reply
to this email with ‘Eco Speakers’ in the subject line.
EcoFest Niagara
St. Catharines CLIMATE ACTION NOW is hosting an EcoFest Niagara in late
March. This is not a replacement for the Eco Summit and Trade Show
requested from the City to bring into the mainstream, municipal best-case
practices, detailed overviews and a trade show that highlights the best
products/practices from throughout the province. In contrast, EcoFest
Niagara will highlight what we, locally, are achieving along with other Non
Profits, as well as locally sourced or supplied products, services and
companies that deserve recognition for furthering ecological awareness and
practices. Event Speakers will be announced in the weeks to come.
Limited hall capacity reduces the numbers of vendors that we can accept
comfortably. We require member suggestions for green companies and
products. Let’s celebrate and advertise businesses of service, retail, and
industry that make an ecological effort and offer them a booth to advertise
and connect with residents.
Category examples:
Dry Cleaners, Restaurants, Food Stores, Wineries, Photography…
Lawn Services, Roofing, Flooring, Printers…
Cleansers, Clothing, Investments, …
To offer suggestions for inclusion in EcoFest Niagara, reply to this email
using ‘EcoFest Niagara’ in the subject line. Be sure to include how they’re
achieving sustainable practices, reducing emissions, reducing waste, and so
on.
My personal wish list for 2008 is an office assistant, an events
coordinator, greater funding, a laptop and projector, 2 additional board
members from the educational and business community, an upsurge for the
local food processing industry, banks of rain barrels and solar attic fans
on every house, a recycling bin for every garbage bin, events that use local
fare…
