Watch for this one in the region as it is rare. The cucumber magnolia is another Carolinian tree who's range currently ends in Niagara. We are lucky to still have a few left. There are many magnolia varieties that grow a cucumber like fruit and many of them can be viewed at the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens. This tree was photographed on Welland Rd in Fenwick just North of Canborough Rd on the South side. You can't miss it because it is enormous. It is said that aboriginals used this tree as a place of worship. That makes it a mighty old tree! If you find one of these in the wild please let me know. The MNR has placed them on the endangered species list. Being self pruners it will be hard to find one as wide as it is tall but these trees in gentler climates can grow as far horizontally as they can vertical. Some suggest a minimum of 1/4 acre to plant this shade intolerant tree. Dan

Cool. They are indeed rare. If I am ever by that way I am going to stop and take a look.

570 Welland Rd. It's a little harder to find now due to the top snapping off and it's hidden between a few soft needle pine but it was there tonight .
